Margaret Natalie Smith, also known as Dame Maggie Smith, plays the stern Professor Minerva MacGonagall in the Harry Potter big screen adaptations. Her acting career began in 1956 and won her first Academy Award for Best Actress in 1969 for the film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, where she played the role of a Scottish schoolteacher. She received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1978 for her role as Diana Barrie in California Suite. Eight years later, she became the Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which was raised to Dame Commander in 1990. Other noteworthy roles include the Duchess of York in Richard II and Charlotte Bartlett in A Room with a View. In 1990 she won a Tony Award for Best Actress for Lettice and Lovage.
